Description
A favorite haunt of mine in Batavia Illinois is the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab is thirty miles west of Chicago with the twelve square mile complex having two large cyclotrons, the towering Wilson Hall, resident bison, and hundreds of water fowl. Ive spent many hours meandering around the grounds both indoors and out. One of my favorite photographs is one I took of a retired tanker truck that was once used to transport liquid helium. Helium is used to achieve near zero Kelvin temperatures in the coils that power the cyclotrons electromagnets to the effect that superconductivity occurs which allows huge amounts of electricity to flow with almost no friction thus solving the overheating problem.
When I photographed the old truck my over active mind began thinking about the transcendental world of superconductivity and how it may bring humankind the Holy Grail of Science- OVER UNITY and the promise of free energy! And then I looked through my view camera eyepiece and saw how the words Fermilab Helium were now jumbled, thanks to a broken hinge. This snapped me back to reality and the words under unity popped into my mind.
