Description
Carl Sandburg called Chicago the city of broad shoulders. When the beloved poet penned these words the arteries that enlivened the great city were its railways. Nowadays the rails remain alive and well to ensure the city continues to be the stacker of wheat and hog butcher for the world. More stormy, husky, and brawling than ever, today the lifeblood of Chicago also flows through a system of freeways and turnpikes. Interstate 94 runs from Detroit to Billings Montana. Chicago, the largest city and the heart of the I 94 corridor, has named its various I94 byways after celebrated heroes- Edens Expressway flows like a pulmonary artery from Jefferson Park to Northbrook. One warm summer evening I was working my way north along the Edens when I was urged to take the Wilson Avenue exit to capture the verve of the great highway. From my overpass vantage point I could see Lawrence Avenue up ahead and beyond it was Foster. I set up my trusty view camera on Gitzo tripod and put the shutter speed at a quarter of a second to show the pulmonary flow, to and fro, to the city of broad shoulders.
