Description
The town of Manistee Michigan gets it name from the Ojibwe language and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan between the towns of Ludington and Traverse City. The little town of 5000 lies at the mouth of the Manistee River. I’ve found its architecture to be a treasure trove of photographic possibilities, both the homes and the buildings. Ivy’s gift shop is next to another gift shop named Whale’s Wharf. Ivy’s has both local and general merchandise while Whale’s Wharf has a nautical theme. The little cove that houses the gift shops is well lit at night as the store owners leave their lights on plus the streets of Manistee are well lit with vintage street lamps. I had photographed this venue twice before, both with color and black and white film and I had always photographed it with the tops of the buildings converging even though, with my view camera, I had the shift option which could straighten the buildings out- I simply liked the buildings converging!
On this late Summer evening I got a bonus- the full moon was positioned just behind the skyline of the little cove. I put my Gitzo tripod in just the right spot to catch the coronal light of the oncoming moon. The moon seemed to be moving fast that night. While I was futzing with the levers and knobs of my clunky medium format view camera the moon came into view to cause a lens flare. I quickly repositioned the tripod and squeezed off but two shots. After packing my camera bag I ventured on home, confident I had captured another urban nightscape winner.
