Description
This piece could be considered Ekphrasis art in that it sort of pays homage to Picasso’s “The Old Guitarist”. I plucked ‘the old guitarist’ from online stock photos and placed the beloved musician from Picasso’s Blue Period on the beach next to Holland Michigan’s famous Big Red lighthouse. But that was after I did a color ‘Invert’ with Photoshop so that Big Red would become ‘Big Blue’. When I used the color Invert tool everything in the image went through a color reversal with all the reds becoming a cyanic blue and vise versa. After the Invert I retained most of the colors but changed a few including my decision to make the sky into a textured red. If you buy an 11 X 14 or larger print of this image you’ll be able to read a little sign on the near side of the lighthouse that now reads ”Big Blue”. I love my hometown of Holland and so I’m allowed to make fun of our clichés and bromidic icons. Big Red is photographed so much it’s challenging ‘Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes from Empire Bluffs’ as Michigan’s Motif #1 and as such I wanted to sprinkle a little levity into our ‘Water Wonderland’ cauldron by suggesting we not take our beloved lighthouse so seriously. Count me among the masses who have snapped off many a photograph of our treasured lighthouse with this one done on a lazy hazy July afternoon.
