Description
My most popular photograph is Munfordville Sonic Drive-In. It gets more hits than all the rest of my photographs combined and also earned me the highest award Ive ever won. But its not the only really cool Sonic Drive-In to be found in Kentucky. NOOOOTheres another one in Bowling Green, the home of the Corvette. As with the Munfordville Sonic Drive-In I arrived one evening just after a rain storm had blessed the parking lot with a wondrous mirror finish. The best angle had me positioned in a triangular parking lot island with view camera perched above a shrub with tripod legs kissing the prickly base of the unfortunate plant. It wasnt easy to find the best blend of focal plane tilt and swing to get both the row of menu pendant boards and flaming pavement into focus. I was glad I had both a Beattie Intenscreen and fresnel lens on my reflex housing ground glass. Even with the optimum focal plane orientation I knew the shot required a tiny aperture of at least F22. Reala 100, my film of choice, gives me nano resolution and great exposure latitude, but I have to keep my TTL meter close to the recommended ISO 100 setting which results in the tiny aperture having to pair with a long exposure, the problem compounded by the nettlesome reciprocity factor that occurs in low light situations. Thus the shutter was set on B as I counted out 16 seconds to an inner concert of Bachs Minuet in G major. I then bracketed up and down a stop, knowing that my first exposure was probably spot-on but that my psyche demanded I cover all the bases. When the film was developed and scanned and I beheld the image on a Photoshop screen, I quickly worked my way through the toolbox and soon had the retro venue optimized to show the fun and beauty of its garish glamour.
