Description
Point Betsie Lighthouse is located on the northeast shore of Lake Michigan at the southern entrance to the Manitou Passage. Beautiful Crystal Lake is just to the east and the charming town of Frankford is to the south. The gambrel roofed lighthouse was completed in 1858 at a cost of $3000. On this late December afternoon I was delighted to see a royal blue sky accented by fluffy clouds. It was still early in the Winter season and so the sandy beach was still free of snow and ice. This meant that the primo spot to position my Linhof Technica view camera on Gitzo tripod was on the now firm sand with polarizer lens turned to its max setting. I set the aperture to F16 and did a slight lens tilt to ensure that the entire image would be sharply focused. To catch the crashing waves in all their glory the shutter speed was set to 1/30th of a second. For a few minutes I stood and watched the Lake Michigan surf to determine which advancing white caps made for the most dramatic waves. I then squeezed off but a single shot, packed my gear, and ventured north to Sleeping Bear Dunes.
