Description
Northern Michigans Whitefish Bay was memorialized in song by Gordon Lightfoots The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. This song tells the story of a turbulent storm in November 1975 off Whitefish Point that took the lives of 29 mariners aboard the bulk carrier Edmund Fitzgerald. Like all beautiful ladies Lake Superior has a complex personality ranging from cruel to peaceful. On a late afternoon in October 2010 I was working my way back to my motel room in Paradise Michigan when I caught a subtle and beautiful late afternoon sky out to my left. Parking my car I walked down to the beach that overlooks the southern portion of Whitefish Bay. I marveled at the sereneness and pastel colors and my thoughts went to Gordon Lightfoots song; what a contrast this scene was to his epic song. Yes, the lady can be most peaceful and kind.
