Description
From Michigan City on the southern shores of Lake Michigan to the Straits of Mackinac at the northern tip of the lower peninsula there is beach after beach for the nature lover to enjoy. At about the halfway point, between Muskegon and Ludington, are the world famous Silver Lake Dunes. People come from half a continent away to race up and down the dunes in dune buggies. For those of more tranquil mind the drive out to Little Point Sable lighthouse is of more interest. The road to the lighthouse meanders along the tributary that joins Silver Lake to Lake Michigan, aptly named Silver Creek. I was making the drive out to the lighthouse on a warm May day in 2010 when I almost suffered a whiplash when my head was jerked rightward by the sight of an elegant swan who had boldly decided to build a nest in the middle of Silver Creek. I quietly parked my car and grabbed my medium format view camera on Gitzo tripod. I was confident that the Reala film I had in the film holder would do a good job capturing the majesty of the moment. After a month or so of swift Winter runoff the creek was again flowing lazily to the Great Lake allowing this photographer to get a clear image of the big birds reflection against an aqueous tapestry of lush vernal greens. It was all perfect except that the swan had her head turned toward the distant bank. I dared not move any closer and the downstream bank to my left was occupied by trees and brush. So I boldly threw a small rock into the water just in front of me. I was hoping for the rascally rock to give me the twofer of the swan turning her head plus an interesting ripple heading out toward the placid midstream waters. Success!
