Description
After spending most of the day at Silver Lake Dunes we motored on over to Little Point Sable Light in the hope of getting a notable photo or two of the iconic lighthouse while the sun was setting. It was the Summer Solstice day, June 20, and we knew the sun was setting just after 9pm. We got there with just a few minutes to spare and both Kris and I squeezed off a couple shots of the lighthouse and then split up to venture to our very own feng shui spots. On that day mine was about half way up the dune where the winds had made an undulating plateau, sort of a respite before the big climb to the top. Catching my breath, I turned and faced the lake to check out the setting sun. At the waters edge were a group of nine people silhouetted against the rippling lake. It looked like they were four couples and a teenage boy. They were obviously excited and delighted to share the experience of a beautiful Lake Michigan sunset on this longest day of the year. Were they thinking about tomorrow being a shorter day and that the lake before them would be a sheet of ice in six months? NO!! They were talking and gesturing wildly, snapping off their own masterpieces and simply enjoying the moment. I waited for the group of nine to get into the best position where they were separated enough for the lake to be seen between themselves but close enough to convey the sense of their oneness. The moment occurred when the orb of the sun was split asunder by two strips of cumulus clouds. I squeezed off several shots and then rejoined Kris back at the car.
