Artist's Description
I was in Newport Beach on business staying with an old friend who had graciously let me crash at her nice beach condo. I was done for the day at the convention and my friend was out meeting with clients. Starting at Balboa, I decided to walk the concrete boardwalk (since renamed ‘Newport Balboa Bike Trail’) down to the Newport Pier. The scene was very different from what I see in West Michigan which meant that there was much for me to photograph. While I was trying to get the optimum angle of view to photograph a surf shop, a couple of body builder type dudes walked toward me. It was late afternoon which meant that the sun was directly behind me. For capturing the surf shop on film I definitely would have angled the camera up so that my reflection wouldn’t have been in the picture, but for the unfolding ‘Three Beefcakes’ image the third Beefcake, me, had to be in the picture and in the furtive form of a shadow.
