In 2003 I took a Saturday morning photography field trip with Dan Henderson, one of Michigan’s best photographers and Fire Chief of our Holland fire department. It was Dan’s idea to go to a section of the Saugatuck Dunes where he and his kids had spent many an afternoon. We headed south out of Holland along 66th Street, a winding road that hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline. Parking Dan’s SUV next to Gilligan Lake, we ventured through the dune forest toward the beach. After a few minutes we came to the leeward side of the dunes which, because of it’s the downwind side, is much steeper than the windward side. Still recovering from recent hip replacement surgery, the climb up the dune was a challenge. It was worth the effort. Once up on the dune ridge we enjoyed a spectacular view of the Saugatuck Dunes and Lake Michigan. I noticed that the ridge subscribed a semicircle and overlooked a huge dip in the dunes.
