Artist's Description
Thirty miles west of Chicago is the Fox River valley. I’ve motored up and down Highway 31 along the charming valley many times. Heading north from North Aurora one goes through Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, South Elgin and finally Elgin before taking interstate 90 back toward Chicago. South Elgin is blessed with a quaint little outdoor museum called the Fox River Trolley Museum. I’ve been to the museum many times, with medium format view camera in tow, and always find a different trolley car that beckons to be captured on film. In a recent trip to the museum my attention was grabbed by a retired trolley car that had the name ‘The Little Train That Could’. An obvious homage to the famous Watty Piper children’s book “The Little Engine That Could”, I was certain I wanted to photograph the vintage rail car from a diagonal perspective. Although shot on Fuji Reala color film, its entropic skin was best presented in black and white. I decided to retain the film’s color for the cartoonish imag...
