Artist's Description
Point Betsie Lighthouse is located on the northeast shore of Lake Michigan at the southern entrance to the Manitou Passage. Beautiful Crystal Lake is just to the east and the charming town of Frankford is to the south. The gambrel roofed lighthouse was completed in 1858 at a cost of $3000. Like most Michigan photographers I have pointed my camera at the iconic lighthouse many times as I did on this very cold Christmas day. I got off a couple of direct shots and then turned around to look south away from the lighthouse. The ice formation before me reminded me of the stalagmites I had seen at Mammoth Cave. And my favorite wind blown trees were in full glory to my left. As a bonus I could see my wife down the beach about a quarter of a mile away coming back from her own little adventure. I set up my Linhof view camera and waited for the sun to burst through the awesome cloud cover.
