Along the beach in Venice California is the iconic weightlifting Mecca called Muscle Beach. Strength athletes such as Steve Reeves and Jack LaLanne got their start there. Next to the Muscle Beach weightlifting platform, on the inland side of the beach, are many souvenir shops and boutiques. It was late December as the family and I left a very snowy Holland Michigan for summery southern California to take in its many wonders, while I had the side job of becoming adept with my new medium format film camera- a Horseman VH-R. Playing with the controls of my new camera, I waited for the confluence of people, sky, lighting, and kitschiness to squeeze off a shot that expressed the feeling a guy from wintery Michigan has in a place unlike anything he sees back home. When I saw a quintet of shoppers decked out in denim and a pretty sun goddess checking out her next purchase, I knew it was time.
