Description
Laughing Whitefish Falls is in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula southeast of Marquette. I visited the limestone escarpment after a four day stay on the Keweenaw Peninsula which meant that my travels took me south along US-41 to M-94 east. Laughing Whitefish Falls is often described as a long slide, and with a drop of 100’, is considered as Michigan’s tallest falls. The falls and its namesake Laughing Whitefish River were named by the Ojibwe indians who thought that the mouth of the river resembled a laughing whitefish when viewed from Lake Superior. I photographed the fan shaped wall of water both at the top and at the bottom of the 150 step staircase that ends at an observation deck. This view is looking across the top of the falls and was shot with my medium format view camera on Gitzo tripod with lens tilt invoked to have the entire image in focus. I chose a one second exposure in order to give the flowing water a silky smoothness plus it gave me the bonus of being able to set the aperture to F16 to further help in the depth of field. After this shot I made the long trek to the bottom of the staircase for another vantage point of this most interesting water falls.
