Pilsen is a neighborhood on the Lower West Side of Chicago. It was first settled by Czech immigrants in the 19 Century who named the district after a large city in their home country. Pilsen is very ethnically diverse with recent decades seeing an influx of Hispanics. Heading west on 18th Street, Angels Tire is hard to miss, especially at night, with a neon tour de force of bright reds, greens and yellows. I’ve photographed the Pilsen icon many times, with each visit presenting a fresh vantage point for this lover of urban nightscapes.
