As someone who does a lot of road trips I’ve become a connoisseur of rest stops. I admit that I have a grudge against states that have few or really bad rest stops. In the Midwest my neighbors to the south, Illinois and Indiana, have few rest stops and the ones they have are dingy or glorified fast food joints- e.g. Chicago’s Oasis system. I’m proud to say that my state of Michigan has rest stops that are both comfortable and ‘works of art’. One of the best rest stops in the state is on the west side of US 31 north of Shelby in Oceana County. Its official name is Hart Rest Area 530. It’s located in a state recreation area which includes nearby Hart Montague Bicycle Trail Park. The topographics of the area include many gentle hills and wetlands. Because of the hilliness, the rest stop’s parking is on two plateaus with trucks and campers taking the high ground. The public building has rest rooms and snacks and is positioned atop a hill.
