For the scenic drive south out of Ludington Michigan take the Pere Marquette highway. The highlight for me along the highway has been the Harbison-Walker Refractory complex, also called H-W, located near the end of the two lane road just a mile before it veers east and crosses over US 31. I always photographed the various H-W buildings at night, preferably with a full moon which contributed a soft light to the ever present harsh industrial lights. In it�s hayday H-W manufactured products for the steel industry from magnesium hydroxide which they procured from a nearby DOW Chemical plant.
My favorite photograph from the east side was done in early March 1996. It was very cold that night which meant that the plumes from the smokestacks were particularly awesome as the water vapor would turn into microscopic ice crystals to vividly reflect any nearby light. I used my Linhof Technica 4 X 5 view camera on Gitzo tripod with T-Max 100 film. The exposure had to be long enough...
