On Christmas eve of 1989 I was on a photography field trip working my way 'up north' along U.S. Route 31 in Michigan. The sun had just gone down when I turned west off Route 31 onto a residential street in Manistee in search of a dazzling photograph. After about a block I was blown away by what I saw. To my left was a ninetieth century home with all the lights turned on and with fresh snow hanging precariously at all the right spots. The Christmas decorations capped it off. I knew my 8 second exposure would not show the falling flakes, but the pounding snow was leaving pock marks on the snow drifts which I found charming. I was exhilarated and then motored north with near zero visibility for the next 30 minutes and took a room in Onekama. I knew that this shot alone justified the whole trip.
