Charlotte Amalie is the largest city in the Virgin Island archipelago. I had the good fortune of visiting the lovely tropical mecca in 1994, a year before the devastation of Hurricane Marilyn in September 1995. Charlotte Amalie suffered a direct hit by the category three hurricane which claimed eight lives and the destruction of 50% of all the town’s structures. Of the remaining structures, 30% of them were seriously damaged. This photograph shows Charlotte Amalie in its pre-hurricane glory.
