Northern Michigan's 'Tunnel of Trees' is a twenty mile stretch of meandering two lane road from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. Officially named M-119, the asphalt road serpentines along the crest of Lake Michigan dunes and is punctuated by hairpin turns and roller coaster dips. Heading south from Cross Village, the road hugs the lakeshore for about sixteen miles and then veers east towards Harbor Springs. At this point, for those who wish to continue moving along the shoreline, they can do so by turning right onto Lower Shore Drive. In October of 2014 I did just that and immediately had my attention grabbed by a huge maple tree in full Autumn splendor. The lovely home behind the tree with its cedar shake siding, arched windows, and gabled roof sealed the deal and impelled me to grab my medium format view camera with Reala film and Singh-Ray filter and squeeze off several shots before the mid morning light turned harsh.
