About Kris Rasmusson
James Rasmusson is a resident of Holland Michigan who has been creating fine art photographs since the early 80’s. Jim’s photo-art is best known for themes that express the drama and majesty of nature. “I like to underscore the abstract and tease the mind. I am ever alert for juxtapositions that express irony, absurdity, and poignancy. I want people to feel both tension and resolution in my compositions.” Specializing in scenes from the Great Lakes region, the artist’s portfolios also include the Ozarks, Arizona and California, the Florida Keys, River Rouge, Chicago, “Suspended Amusements”, Nightscapes, Winterscapes, Ontario, and the Caribbean.
The award-winning photographer’s work has appeared in many publications as well as group and solo exhibits, with the artist having won three first place awards in the internationally acclaimed Grand Rapids Festival. His work can be found in private and permanent collections that include Warner Norcross and Judd, Kent County, Holland Area Arts Council, and the Kenneth Dishell Estate collection. In 2005 James had four pieces selected for the Governor's Mansion in Lansing by Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. Three of Jim's Lake Michigan dune photographs are also featured in the top selling "The Saugatuck Dunes" coffee table book.
A graduate of Michigan State University, James studied under the guidance of world renowned photographers Howard Bond, Paul Schrantz, and Monte Nagler. The artist’s work can be seen and purchased at the Button Petter gallery in Douglas Michigan.
Besides photography, the artist is also an award winning poet who won the Shadow Poetry 2005 Chapbook competition. “I endeavor to blend the artistic mediums of photography and poetry so that each will cross-pollinate the other.”
Believing that art is in the mind of the artist, James employs a variety of methods to achieve this aim which include darkroom solarization, hand coloring, and digital manipulation.
