Description
I’ve been a fan of gritty urban art and the paintings and photography that express it for as long as I can remember. Edward Hopper is one of my favorites. I lived in the Detroit area during most of the 1980’s which was the hay day of punk rock. One Sunday afternoon my photography buddy Sun and I went on a little field trip in his hometown of Rochester Hills. Sun showed me the graffiti wonders under the Main Street bridge on the south end of town. I scanned over the words and artwork painted on the concrete columns. What caught my attention most was a six word scribbling that read “who knows who cares why bother”. It seemed to perfectly capture the cynical anomic attitude of the punk rockers. I later learned that this line was from a hardcore punk rock song by Scream, an 80’s Washington DC punk rock band. The punkers had their own no frills punk graffiti and this simple rant nailed it. I snapped off a few shots of the graffiti and Sun and I ventured on to elsewhere in his town. I liked how the image printed up, but the lighting wasn’t quite right. I returned to the site with camera two more times and on the last attempt I had intentionally waited for a time of day when I knew the sun would be slicing through the middle of the scene to convey a feeling of bifurcation The curved line of sun and shadow reminded me of the iconic yin yang symbol.
