Description
My parents spent the last twenty years of their lives in the Florida Keys. It was the highlight of their lives with Dad fishing most every day and Mom playing contract bridge. I visited them every chance I got. They lived in Marathon Florida on Key Vaca. My Dad sold the fish he didn’t want to eat to City Fish Company. One day I joined Dad as he drove to City Fish to drop off the day’s catch. On the way there I spied a funky photo possibility- it was Whiskey Creek Motors. To avoid the scary looking bikers I arrived at the venue the next morning just after sunrise. Being alone I was free to mill around and got off a number of interesting shots. This is my favorite one. What kind of creative mind would think of having a toilet seat on a motorcycle and painted with old glory red white and blue. I chose to present the image using the selective colorization technique to emphasize its patriotic splendor. On the fender of the ‘commode bike’ are the words “Made In Conch Republic”. The bikers epitomized the essence of the independent spirit of many of the people who live on the Florida Keys who, with tongue-in-cheek, speak of receding from the union to form the Conch Republic.
