Description
A bobbing bow, a frothy stern,
a starboard feint from a thruster churn.
The passengers laugh as they sip merlot
the tugboat cap’n has their fate in tow.
The above is the first stanza from a poem I wrote about tugboats. The idea of the poem rattled around in my head for years and it wasn’t until I saw tugboat Wendy Anne that I finally turned the crank and wrote the poem. Wendy Anne docks in lovely Lake Charlevoix and does most of her work in Lake Michigan. In case you’re wondering, Lake Charlevoix is connected to Lake Michigan by a channel that runs through downtown Charlevoix. Wendy Anne is small compared to many of her big brothers and sisters but like all tugs she knifes through towering breakers and hurricane winds to bring the iron giants safely ashore.
