Artist's Description
Founded by the Vinsetta family in 1919 on a dirt road called Woodward Avenue in the Detroit suburb of Berkley, Vinsetta Garage first served horse-drawn carriages. Soon after, owners of the ‘horseless carriage’ became their main customers and Woodward Avenue became a paved four lane boulevard and a favorite cruising and dragging venue for car lovers of the ‘Motor City’. Known for its art deco architecture and old-fashioned gas pumps, the popular garage specialized in restoring classic cars and motivated many an artist, including yours truly, to photograph and write poems about the iconic landmark of a simpler happier time. Sadly, after 91 years, Vinsetta Garage is now closing. In these bad economic times the current owner Jack Marwil has been unable to find any takers and, baring a miracle, the Motor City wonder will face the wrecking ball. Why oh why can’t Vinsetta Garage become a museum?? I wish Mr. Jay Leno would ride in on a white Harley and save the incomparable Vinsetta Garage.

One of the best night shots I have seen. A tremendous photo and loaded with atmosphere. It would be a great shame should it go the way of the wrecking ball. Congrats on your sale and I hope this wonderful image goes some way toward preserving this nostalgic little chunk of America.

A beautiful nostalgic and classical catch here, James! Love old style pumps, the nice lighting and reflections, and am anticipating a 57 Chevy convertible to be pulling up to the pumps at any second. Congrats on a very well deserved sale!

Thanks. I hope you read the blurb on the photo about this ‘Motor City’ art deco iconic landmark and how after 91 years it’s closing and slated to face the wrecking ball. I think it should become a museum featuring vintage cars. I sincerely want to contact Jay Leno about it as I think he would buy it. Any suggestions? Call me or (regular) email me if you have any ideas.
