Description
When you live in a beauty spot like west Michigan you discover that there are places that locals know about and go to that are not known by tourists. The truth is that we locals like it that way. These are ‘our spots’. One such place is Laketown Beach. It’s pretty much on the border of Holland and Saugatuck with both towns laying claim to the secluded beach hideaway. One reason that tourists are seldom seen there is because it doesn’t appear on many maps and your final turn off 64th Street onto 142nd Avenue has no signage about the park! The beach has an awesome wooden stairway that takes the ambitious hiker most of the way up the dune with rest landings along the way to catch your breath or park your bod to enjoy the spectacular view. The park is not for comfort junkies as its only amenity is a porta potty. I was at the park on a cool October evening just before sundown and had lugged my medium format view camera on Gitzo tripod up the stairway to a spot where the stairway ran parallel to Lake Michigan and cut through the dunes. This spot allowed for a foreground of dune grass to frame a lovely Autumn sunset that slowly dissolved beneath a placid Lake Michigan.
