About a mile before the Kalamazoo River empties into Lake Michigan it widens to form a small lake which is referred to by locals as Saugatuck Harbor. With a huge sand dune defining the west side of the harbor, its shoreline is shared by the towns of Douglas and Saugatuck. An excellent look at the harbor is seen from atop the dune with the best view from the summit of Mount Baldhead where a wooden deck has been built, complete with benches, on which those who have climbed the 183 steps to the top can rest. To the west of the summit the windward side of the dune gently descends through a dune forest to Oval Beach. Carrying my Linhof Technica on Gitzo tripod with 30 pound Domke bag to the summit was about as much fun as getting up at 6 AM for 'night person Jim', but it was all worth the trouble as I was blessed with a fading morning fog in the distance and a small yacht motoring through the channel below at just the right angle and lighting.
