After successfully photographing the east side of Ludington Michigan’s Harbison-Walker Refractory I decided to venture over to the west side to see if that side had anything worth capturing on film. H-W, as it’s called, manufactured products for the steel industry from magnesium hydroxide which they procured from a nearby DOW Chemical plant.
I photographed the west side on a warm Summer night in July 1997. I parked as close as I could and then carried my camera gear to a small dirt mound which afforded me the necessary angle of view. The scene was very well lit and I delighted in the warm orange-yellow glow. I quickly assembled my Linhof Technica and pushed the Gitzo tripod legs deep into the soft earth. I used Reala 100 film with a four second exposure to capture the plumes of smoke that billowed before me. When the film was developed and prints were made I was very pleased.
