Description
Tahquamenon Falls are two different sets of waterfalls on the Tahquamenon River. Located on the east side of the Upper Peninsula, the falls are Michigan’s largest waterfall and the third largest east of the Mississippi. “By the rushing Tahquamenaw” is referenced in Longfellow’s epic poem ‘The Song of Hiawatha’. After a five mile bout of frothy churns and swirls over six major drops and many smaller rapids the river finally empties into Lake Superior. In trying to describe the unique color of the waterfalls many people say that it looks like root beer. This brownish color comes from the tannins which leach from the contributory cedar swamps. The Upper falls are 200 feet across with a drop of about 48 feet. Lower Tahquamenon Falls is located four miles downstream and is actually a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island which visitors reach via rowboat which they rent from a state sponsored boat livery. A hiking trail circumnavigates the island and runs between the falls. In some areas the trail is so close you can feel the spray! The segment of the Lower falls in this photo is where one of the five falls is split by yet another much smaller island.
