To my online artist friends I’m known as the Meanderthal Man and so, in keeping with my moniker, when I journey from town to town my preference is to NOT travel via expressway. This is especially true in Michigan as the little towns and natural wonders off the beaten path are forever interesting. One Sunday afternoon I was working my way south from Ludington Michigan to Pentwater by motoring along Pere Marquette highway. This two lane road used to be the main road before they built US 31 and as such one can see the weathering remains of a bygone era. I came upon an abandoned school which had the quaint name ‘Standard School House’. To a 21st Century guy this name was amusing. I thought to myself, did they have schools named “Substandard School House”?
