Description
On Christmas eve of 1989 I was on a photography field trip working my way 'up north' along U.S. Route 31 in Michigan. The sun had just gone down when I turned west off Route 31 onto a residential street in Manistee in search of a dazzling photograph. After about a block I was blown away by what I saw. To my left was a ninetieth century home with all the lights turned on and with fresh snow hanging precariously at all the right spots. The Christmas decorations capped it off. Since the sky was quickly going dark I put my 4X5 Linhof Technica together and got off a shot within a couple of minutes. It started to snow very hard. I knew my 8 second exposure would not show the falling flakes, but the pounding snow was leaving pock marks on the snow drifts which I found charming. I was exhilarated and then motored north with near zero visibility for the next 30 minutes and took a room in Onekama. I knew that this shot alone justified the whole trip.
