On the east end of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and just west of Michigan City is Mount Baldy. To access the 123 foot wandering dune I go to a park that isn’t even shown on most maps, just east of the Town of Pines, it’s often referred to as the Rice Street park. On this cold November morning I was working my way to Chicago by way of the dunes and hoping to add an image or two to my Great Lakes beach portfolio. I found a beautiful section of the dunes with favorable lighting and pushed the updune leg of my Gitzo tripod, pylon like, deep into the sand. Choosing a lens for my Linhof Technica I proceeded to select the optimum settings for the T-Max 100 film that was in my film holders. In the distance, and to the left, was a power plant which was spewing soot and steam into the otherwise pristine late Autumn air. At first I thought I’d crop out the irksome power plant.
