Description
M-37 is a Michigan trunkline highway that goes from Kalamazoo County in the south to a northern terminus at the end of Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse County. Along the trunkline, motorists travel through farmland, forests, suburbs, towns, and cities. The section of M-37 that snakes through Old Mission Peninsula has been designated as a Pure Michigan Scenic Byway. In the autumn of 2014, as the sun began to come up over the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay, I began a slow motion journey along the Scenic Byway with medium format film camera in tow. Beginning at the lighthouse, I segued east along Old Mission Road to the Old Mission General Store and then turned south onto Smokey Hollow Road to see 2 Lads Winery wreathed in a dense morning fog. Heading west along Ladd Road I re-joined M37 and the heart of wine country to behold Chateau Chantal Winery in all her autumn glory. I grabbed a cup of Jo at the Peninsula Grill and then drove past Bowers Harbor Road to see a soon-to-be-harvested Brys Estate Vineyard to my left. Up head were Old Mission and Chateau Grand Traverse wineries followed by Bonobo Winery and Peninsula Cellars. The sun was now showing the autumnal reds and yellows in full saturation. I quickly set up camera and tripod and felt like I was in the Zen as I sought to capture the Pure Michigan Scenic Byway.
