Description
Along the shores of Lake Superior is one of northern Michigan’s loveliest beaches. Crisp Point beach, with its 58’ tall white brick lighthouse, is only 25 miles ‘as the crow flies’ northwest of Paradise Michigan but the drive I took from my Paradise motel turned out to be an 90 minute adventure. The last ten miles took me along a bumpy winding road that went past Culhane Lake and bordered the big lake over the last three miles. I parked my car, checked into the Visitor’s building, and met a friendly couple there who, in their retirement, were now the keepers of the Crisp Point property. With photography gear in tow I first sampled the scenic wonders at ground level and then made the climb to the top of the lighthouse. It was a very windy day which meant that, even on a sturdy Gitzo tripod, I had to set the shutter at 1/125. Of the different views I captured on Fuji Reala film, this view looking east is my favorite. In this photo, to the left along the skyline, one can see the exact spot that the Edmund Fitzgerald sank on a fateful day in 1975 as the freighter was battered by 35’ high waves.
